MUMBAI – Farmers in Andhra Pradesh sowed kharif crops across 297,000 hectares as of Wednesday, down 3% from the corresponding period last year, according to data from the state agriculture department. This is mainly because rainfall over most districts in the state has been subdued. From Jun. 1 to Wednesday, coastal Andhra Pradesh received 105.3 millimetres of rain, 10% below normal, and the Rayalaseema subdivision received 37% below-normal rain at 47.4 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department.
The area under pulses and oilseeds fell on year while paddy and cotton acreage rose. As of Wednesday, the area under paddy was 96,000 hectares, up 9% on year. However, maize acreage fell 24% on year to 16,000 hectares and the total foodgrain acreage also fell 15% on year to 133,000 hectares.
The area under pulses fell to 15,000 hectares from 39,000 hectares a year ago, the data showed. The area under tur, the largest kharif legume grown in the state, was down 77% on year at 8,000 hectares. Oilseeds acreage halved to 32,000 hectares from 64,000 hectares in the corresponding year-ago period. Under oilseeds, groundnut acreage fell 55% to 25,000 hectares, the data showed.
Meanwhile, area under cotton rose significantly, by 68% on year, to 126,000 hectares. In Andhra Pradesh, sowing of kharif crops begins in June while harvest ends as late as December for some crops.
