Telangana kharif acreage down 7% on yr as of Wed; maize up 39%

MUMBAI – The sowing of kharif crops in Telangana reached 4.3 million acres (1 acre = 0.4 hectares) as of Wednesday, down over 7% on year from 4.7 million acres sown in the same period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Maize acreage rose 39% on year to 247,934 acres, the report showed.

 

The area sown under paddy rose to 213,746 acres from 156,100 acres a year ago. The acreage under jowar also rose to 23,030 acres from 20,218 acres last year.

 

Tur acreage stood at 270,342 acres, up from 219,722 acres sown last year, as per the report. The acreage under moong fell to 26,414 acres from 31,501 acres a year ago. The total area sown under all pulses was 306,067 acres, up from 258,972 acres last year.

 

The total area under all oilseeds rose to 263,806 acres from 253,923 acres sown in the previous year. Among oilseeds, the acreage under soybean rose to 263,524 acres from 250,063 acres a year ago. Soybean accounts for most of the acreage under oilseeds in the state.

 

Cotton acreage fell to 3.1 million acres from 3.3 million acres, the report showed. Kharif crops are sown once the southwest monsoon sets in over the country. In Telangana, sowing of kharif crops begins in June while harvest ends as late as December for some crops. 

 

The water level in reservoirs across Telangana was 467.05 thousand million cubic metres, as of Wednesday, compared with 230.59 thousand million cubic metres a year ago, the report said. From Jun. 1-Jul. 2, the state has received 131.7 millimetres of rainfall, 6% below the normal of 140.7 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department.  End
