MUMBAI – Wheat, rice, and maize prices were steady Wednesday from the previous day owing to the lack of fresh cues, traders said. Prices of wheat at Kota in Rajasthan were unavailable as the market was shut because of a strike by traders in the state, local trader Aniket Mehta said. He said trade in the state will resume only from Monday.
Beginning Tuesday, 247 agricultural markets in Rajasthan are shut till Friday in protest against the policies of the state government, according to local media reports. The state government had said it would start imposing a Krishi Kalyan cess of 1% on traded agricultural products in the state's markets starting Tuesday. Traders have demanded that the government keep the cess at 0.5% for the next three years. Till June, the state government had been postponing implementation of the cess by two months at a time.
Prices of WHEAT in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were largely steady from the previous day at INR 2,735 per 100 kg, local trader Gaurav Kochar said. The price of the staple grain in Navi Mumbai's Vashi market was also steady at INR 2,725 per 100 kg, local wholesale dealer Devendra Vora said. According to traders, the price of the grain in Delhi was up INR 5 at INR 2,725 per 100 kg.
Wheat traders are waiting for the government's announcement on open market sales. They expect the government to start selling wheat in the open market from mid-July. According to media reports, the government has set a price of INR 2,550 per 100 kg for selling wheat under the open market sales scheme in the rabi marketing year 2025-26 (Apr-Mar). This is higher than the price of INR 2,325 per 100 kg set for fair and average quality wheat in 2024-25.
Prices of MAIZE in Indore were steady from the previous day at INR 2,270 per 100 kg, Kochar said. As there were no arrivals of rabi maize from farmers and the next maize crop will only start arriving in markets after October, Kochar sees maize prices rising to INR 2,400 per 100 kg in the medium term.
Prices of basmati sella RICE at Vashi were steady at INR 6,000-INR 6,100 per 100 kg, Vora said. Prices of the 1121 basmati rice variety and broken rice were steady at INR 7,800 per 100 kg and INR 2,700 per 100 kg, respectively, he said. Prices of sona masoori rice were also steady at INR 5,200 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijaywada, Andhra Pradesh, local trader Ravi Shankar said. He expects prices of the cereal to move by up to INR 200 on either side till the next crop arrives. End
