MUMBAI – Futures contracts of all three spices fell on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange Wednesday. Prices of turmeric and jeera fell on profit sales. Prices of coriander fell owing to limited demand and large carry-over stocks.
The most-active August contract of TURMERIC was down 1.4% at INR 13,900 per 100 kg because of selling for profit, said Alok Pandey, an analyst at SMC Global Securities. However, factors such as good demand and reports of low stocks in processing pipelines across the country are expected to keep market prices at elevated levels in the longer term, he added.
On the production front, dry weather conditions have supported timely sowing and initial estimates hint at a 15-20% increase in turmeric acreage in the crop year 2025-26 (Jul-Jun) as farmers move away from other crops with relatively lower profit margins, Kedia Advisory said. Sowing of turmeric is expected to have started in June with the early onset of the southwest monsoon.
The most-active July contract of JEERA fell 1.4% to INR 19,980 per 100 kg on profit sales and ample stocks, Pandey said. However, the fall in prices could be limited by renewed export demand and easing geopolitical tensions in West Asia. Export demand from the region has picked up again after the announcement of a ceasefire between Israel and Iran, Kedia Advisory said. Prices could rise further in the medium term as jeera acreage in the current crop year is likely to decline, it said.
The most-active July contract of CORIANDER was down 1.3% at INR 7,170 per 100 kg on limited demand and large carry-over stocks, SMC Global said. Selling pressure from farmers is likely to keep market prices under pressure until genuine demand picks up, the brokerage said.
