MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar fell in the key markets of Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday due to subdued demand while prices in Maharashtra were steady, said traders. Traders believe prices will remain at the current levels for at least a week.

Mills across Uttar Pradesh cut prices by INR 25-INR 30 per 100 kg as the sales quota of 2.2 million tonnes is deemed to be more than sufficient for July as there is very little demand, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. Demand is unlikely to pick up, so there is little chance of prices increasing this month, said Gupta.

In Maharashtra, prices of the sweetener were steady due to lack of fresh cues, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Prices will remain largely steady this week and are likely to fall in the coming days as the quota is more than sufficient and demand poor, Kuvadia said. There are also no festivals this month, he said.

Moreover, due to rain across the country, traders are hesitant to stock sugar as it absorbs moisture and gets spoilt, said Kuvadia. Typically, demand for sugar from soft drink makers and ice cream manufacturers declines in July with the fall in temperature due to the monsoon.

The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Down INR 25-INR 30 at INR 3,820-INR 3,900 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh

--Down INR 25-INR 30 at INR 3,840-INR 3,930 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 3,942-INR 4,060 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Flat at INR 3,820-INR 3,880 per 100 kg in Kolhapur

At 1600 IST, sugar prices on the Intercontinental Exchange rose nearly 1% to 15.83 cents per pound.  End

US$1 = INR 85.70
