Maharashtra kharif acreage dn 1.5% YoY as of Mon, maize up 39%

MUMBAI – The sowing of kharif crops in Maharashtra as of Monday reached 7.86 million hectares, down 1.5% from 7.97 million hectares sown in the corresponding period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Maize acreage rose 39% on year to 817,614 hectares a year ago, the report added.

 

The area sown under paddy rose to 131,794 hectares as of Monday from 123,800 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The acreage under bajra fell to 189,001 hectares from 212,962 hectares last year. 

 

Tur acreage so far stood at 658,682 hectares, down from 667,679 hectares sown last year, according to the report. The acreage under moong rose to 147,079 hectares from 138,712 hectares a year ago. Urad acreage also rose to 238,663 hectares from 208,513 hectares last year. The total area sown under all pulses stood at 1.06 million hectares, up from 1.03 million hectares a year ago.

 

The total area sown under all oilseeds in the state was 3.02 million hectares, down from 3.16 million hectares sown in the previous year, the report showed. Under oilseeds, the acreage under soybean fell to 2.96 million hectares from 3.08 million hectares a year ago, and that of groundnut also fell to 56,980 hectares from 76,430 hectares last year.

 

Cotton acreage in the state fell to 2.56 million hectares from 2.76 million hectares sown in the same period last year, according to the report.

 

Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of the southwest monsoon season around June and harvested around October. The water level in the dams of Maharashtra is at 47.1% of the live storage capacity as of Wednesday, compared with 21.9% a year ago, according to data from the state water resources department.  End
