MUMBAI – Wheat prices in Kota, Rajasthan, were up Tuesday due to firm demand and low arrivals in the market, traders said. Prices of rice and maize were steady from the previous day due to lack of fresh cues, they said.
Prices of WHEAT in Kota were up by INR 20-INR 25 at INR 2,450-INR 2,470 per 100 kilograms due to firm demand and low arrivals, local trader Aniket Mehta said. Arrivals in Kota were down by 1,000 bags at 4,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), and significantly lower than the 10,000 bags seen per day in June, Mehta said. Prices of wheat in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady from the previous day at INR 2,740 per 100 kg, Kochar said. The price of the staple grain in Navi Mumbai's Vashi market was also steady at INR 2,725 per 100 kg, local wholesale dealer Devendra Vora said. According to traders, price of the grain in Delhi was down by INR 5 at INR 2,720 per 100 kg.
According to media reports, the government has set a price of INR 2,550 per 100 kg for selling wheat under the open market sales scheme in 2025-26 (Apr-Mar). This is higher than the price of INR 2,325 per 100 kg set for fair average quality wheat in the previous year. The market expects the government to start sales under the open market sales scheme mid-July.
Prices of MAIZE in Indore were steady from the previous day at INR 2,270 per 100 kg, Kochar said. He remains bullish on maize prices as there were no rabi arrivals from farmers in the market and the next crop will arrive only after October. Kochar sees maize prices rising to INR 2,400 per 100 kg in the medium term.
Prices of basmati sella RICE at Vashi were steady at INR 6,000-INR 6,100 per 100 kg, Vora said. Prices of the 1121 basmati rice variety and broken rice were steady at INR 7,800 per 100 kg and INR 2,700 per 100 kg, respectively, Vora said. Prices of sona masoori rice were also steady at INR 5,200 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijaywada, Andhra Pradesh, local trader Ravi Shankar said. Shankar expects prices of the grain to move by INR 200 per 100 kg on either side till the next crop arrives.
Vora said farmers in Punjab and Haryana may shift to the non-basmati "moti chawal (rice)" from basmati, as the government has increased minimum support price for the kharif marketing year starting October. The minimum support price of paddy common and grade A varieties for the kharif marketing year 2025-26 (Oct-Sept) has been increased by 3% each to INR 2,369 per 100 kg and INR 2,389 per 100 kg, respectively.
