Karnataka kharif acreage rises 4% on yr as of Fri; maize up 20%

MUMBAI – The area sown under kharif crops in Karnataka reached 4.4 million hectares as of Friday, up nearly 4% on year, from 4.2 million hectares sown in the same period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Maize acreage rose 20% to 1.3 million hectares, the report showed.
The area sown under paddy stood at 82,100 hectares, up from 75,900 hectares sown a year ago. The acreage under bajra fell to 69,300 hectares from 80,100 hectares last year.
Tur acreage fell to 740,600 hectares from 899,500 hectares last year, the report showed. The area sown under moong so far stood at 387,800 hectares against 378,300 hectares a year ago. Urad acreage fell to 81,300 hectares from 85,800 hectares last year. The total area sown under all pulses fell to 1.3 million hectares from 1.4 million hectares sown last year.
The total area sown under all oilseeds in the state fell to 506,900 hectares from 572,000 hectares sown in the previous year, according to the report. Among oilseeds, the acreage under soybean was 357,000 hectares, down from 396,400 hectares last year, while that of groundnut fell to 92,700 hectares from 124,300 hectares last year.
Cotton acreage rose to 467,800 hectares from 375,100 hectares sown a year ago. Similarly, the area sown under sugarcane rose to 566,500 hectares from 488,500 hectares last year. Tobacco acreage was 77,300 hectares, up from 74,900 hectares a year ago.
The sowing of kharif crops in Karnataka usually begins in June and ends by September. The main kharif crops grown in the state include maize, tur, soybean, sugarcane, horse gram, cotton, red chillies, and turmeric. End
