Gujarat kharif acreage up 39% on year at 3.4 mln ha as of Mon

MUMBAI – The area under kharif crops in Gujarat as of Monday was 3.4 million hectares, up 39% from 2.4 million hectares a year ago, according to a press release by the state agriculture department. Of the state's normal kharif crop acreage of 8.56 million hectares, which is the average of past three years, 40% has been covered so far. Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of the southwest monsoon season around June and harvested around October.
The acreage under groundnut so far is up at 1.5 million hectares from 899,807 hectares a year ago, according to the press release. Soybean acreage is up at 120,560 hectares from 42,431 hectares last year. The total area sown under all oilseeds was 1.7 million hectares, up from 944,504 hectares a year ago.
Maize acreage in the state is up at 16,263 hectares from 12,301 hectares last year, according to the report. The area sown under bajra is up at 14,421 hectares from 2,843 hectares a year ago. On the other hand, the area sown under paddy is down at 4,558 hectares from 8,615 hectares last year.
The total area sown under pulses has risen to 30,415 hectares from 18,520 hectares sown in the previous year, the report showed. Under pulses, the acreage under tur is 22,706 hectares, up from 16,011 hectares last year. Moong acreage is up at 3,995 hectares from 1,159 hectares a year ago.
Cotton acreage in the state has risen to 1.4 million hectares from 1.3 million hectares sown in the corresponding period last year, according to the report. The area sown under vegetables is up at 72,458 hectares from 53,665 hectares a year ago. End
