Rajasthan kharif acreage up 362% on yr at 7.1 mln ha as of Mon

MUMBAI – The sowing of kharif crops has commenced in Rajasthan, with 7.1 million hectares covered as of Monday, up a whopping 362% on year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The area under kharif crops in the same period a year ago was 1.5 million hectares. The state has set a kharif sowing target of 16.5 million hectares, of which more than 43% has been covered so far.
The area sown under maize rose to 442,619 hectares from 98,600 hectares sown a year ago, the report showed. The acreage under bajra also rose to 2.5 million hectares from 115,720 hectares sown last year, while that of paddy rose to 51,324 hectares from 16,950 hectares a year ago.
Moong acreage in the state jumped to 1.1 million hectares from 115,740 hectares last year, according to the report. The acreage under urad was 47,649 hectares, up from 5,120 hectares a year ago. The total area sown under all pulses rose to 1.4 million hectares from 122,540 hectares sown last year.
The total area sown under all oilseeds was 1.1 million hectares, up from 543,970 hectares sown in the previous year, the report showed. Under oilseeds, the acreage under groundnut rose to 673,808 hectares from 329,430 hectares a year ago, and that of soybean rose to 426,441 hectares from 211,460 hectares last year.
Cotton acreage so far rose to 589,383 hectares from 430,580 hectares sown in the corresponding area last year, according to the report. The acreage under guar, a major crop in the state, rose to 557,828 hectares from 115,530 hectares a year ago.
Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of the southwest monsoon season around June and harvested around October. This year, the southwest monsoon hit the Kerala coast on May 24, eight days ahead of its normal date of Jun. 1, and by May 29 the monsoon current covered southern and northeast India entirely, along with parts of east and central India. The monsoon covered entire India on Sunday, nine days before the normal date of Jul. 8. As such, the sowing of kharif crops in the state got a head-start this year, resulting in a large jump in acreage year-on-year. End
