NEW DELHI – Farmers across the country have planted soybean over 4.3 million hectares till date, with Maharashtra leading so far, the Soybean Processors Association of India said in a release Monday. However, according to government estimates, soybean has been planted over only 2.1 million hectares, it added.
Though sowing of soybean is on across key states, the acreage has dropped as market prices have been low for two consecutive years. "Many farmers have shifted to alternate crops like maize, red gram and cotton. The overall drop in soybean area may be around 5% but a better estimate will be available only after sowing is complete," SOPA said.
In Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh, poor germination has been reported in some areas, leading to re-sowing. SOPA expects soybean sowing across India to end by Jul. 15. So far, Maharashtra is leading other states in soybean acreage at 1.8 million hectares, followed by Madhya Pradesh at 1.5 million hectares, and Rajasthan at 370,000 hectares, SOPA data showed.
