Turnover of commodity derivatives down 12% on month in May, says SEBI

MUMBAI – The turnover of commodity derivatives across Indian exchanges fell nearly 12% on month to INR 61.4 trillion in May, the Securities and Exchange Board of India said in its monthly bulletin. The turnover last month declined on two exchanges and rose on one, the report said.

 

The turnover of derivatives trading on the Multi Commodity Exchange of India fell nearly 12% on month to INR 59.9 trillion, and the turnover of derivatives on the BSE was nil in May. The turnover in futures contracts on the MCX in May was INR 8.4 trillion. The turnover on options during the same period was INR 51.5 trillion.

 

The share of futures and options contracts in the overall turnover was 13% and 87%, respectively. The overall turnover of futures fell over 8% on month to INR 8.5 trillion in May and that of options fell 12% on month to INR 52.9 trillion.

 

The turnover on commodity derivatives on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange rose 1% to INR 130.8 billion in May. The turnover in futures contracts on NCDEX for the month was INR 101.9 billion. The turnover on options during the same period was INR 28.9 billion.

 

The turnover on the National Stock Exchange was down nearly 13% from the previous month at INR 1.38 trillion in May. The MCX accounted for 97.5% of the turnover in May, followed by the NCDEX at 0.2%, and the NSE at 0.001%.

 

The share of farm commodities in the overall turnover was 0.2% and that of non-agricultural commodities was 99.8%, the markets regulator said. The overall turnover of the agricultural segment rose 1% on month to INR 131.4 billion in May, while that of the non-agricultural segment fell nearly 12% on month at INR 61.3 trillion.  End
