MUMBAI - Prices of tur are likely to rise this week due to a fall in arrivals, and low stocks with millers and traders, the India Pulses and Grains Association said in its weekly report on Monday. The market is keeping an eye on import deliveries in July, the association said.
The demand for imported tur is higher than domestic tur as the former is cheaper. Even among imports, tur from African countries is much cheaper than the lemon variety of the legume from Myanmar. Selling pressure from Myanmar is expected to rise until imports from Africa start coming in, it said. Shipments of the African legume are due to arrive after Sept. 15, the association said.
The progress of kharif tur sowing in all the top-producing states is currently mixed, the association said. Tur sowing is ahead in Maharashtra and Gujarat, while it is lagging year-on-year in Karnataka, it said. The southwest monsoon covered entire India on Sunday, ahead of the normal date of Jul. 8, according to the India Meteorological Department. However, more rainfall is needed in the tur-producing regions in Maharashtra and Karnataka for uninterrupted sowing, the association said.
Prices of tur remained weak in some markets in the week ended Saturday due to muted demand from millers and availability of imports, the association said. Though the price gap between domestic tur and imported stock has narrowed, the prices being quoted for shipments of African tur are still much lower, it said.
The demand for tur dal in retail and wholesale remained sluggish, and most mills were running below capacity due to low profits, the association said. In the week ended Saturday, tur prices in Akola, Maharashtra, fell by INR 75 from the previous week to INR 6,925–INR 6,950 per 100 kg. Prices of tur in Delhi were steady at INR 7,050 per 100 kg, according to the association. End
