MUMBAI – Urad prices could rise in the near term due to seasonal demand and low stocks with millers and traders, the India Pulses and Grains Association said in its weekly report on Monday. Prices may also rise as summer crop arrivals are expected to drop during the monsoon, with farmers occupied with kharif sowing, the association said.

Imports from Myanmar are underway, and a few shipments of urad from Brazil may arrive by mid-August. The new kharif crop in India will not hit markets until after October, the association said. If demand picks up in the medium term, there might be a temporary shortage in supply, which could support prices, it said.

Sowing of kharif urad has begun in many states following the commencement of the monsoon, the association said. Urad sowing is ahead in Maharashtra, while it is behind in Karnataka, Telangana, and Gujarat, it said. The southwest monsoon covered entire India on Sunday, nine days before the normal date of Jul. 8, according to the India Meteorological Department. However, more rainfall is needed in the urad-producing regions in Maharashtra and Karnataka for uninterrupted sowing, the association said.

Prices of both domestic and imported urad fell in the week ended Saturday due to low demand from mills, the association said. Weak cost and freight quotes from Myanmar and muted demand for urad dal, or processed urad also contributed to the drop, it said.

In the week ended Saturday, prices of urad in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, fell by INR 100 from the previous week to INR 7,050 per 10 kg, according to the association. Prices of urad imported into Chennai fell by INR 125 from the previous week to INR 6,600 per 100 kg, according to the association.  End
