MUMBAI – Wheat prices were up slightly in key markets in the country Friday owing to lower arrivals in local markets, traders said. They expect prices to continue to move up till the government announces open market sales for wheat. Prices of rice and maize were steady owing to the lack of fresh cues, traders said.

Prices of WHEAT at Kota in Rajasthan were up INR 25 at INR 2,450 per 100 kg owing to firm demand and low arrivals, local trader Aniket Mehta said. Prices of the grain at Indore in Madhya Pradesh rose INR 10 to INR 2,740 per 100 kg, local trader Gaurav Kochar said.

Arrivals in Kota were largely steady from the previous day at 5,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), but lower than the 10,000 bags seen last week, Mehta said. It is usual that arrivals will decrease during the rainy season. The southwest monsoon has set in in Rajasthan, because of which farmers are not bringing wheat to the market, he said. The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for very heavy rainfall in eastern Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.

The price of wheat in Navi Mumbai's Vashi market was steady at INR 2,725 per 100 kg, local wholesale dealer Devendra Vora said. In Delhi, too, the price of the grain was steady at INR 2,750 per 100 kg, traders said.

Wheat prices are expected to stay firm in July and August as arrivals in local markets decline, Kochar said. He expects prices to rise INR 50-INR 100 per 100 kg from the current level till the government starts open market sales of the cereal. Kochar said the government is likely to begin wheat sales by mid-to-late July after reviewing the buffer stock and food inflation trends.

In the financial year 2024-25 (Apr-Mar), the government sold 3.0 million tonnes of wheat under the open market sales scheme with a reserve price of INR 2,325 per 100 kg. In FY24, wheat sales under the open market scheme were at an all-time high of 9.4 million tonnes. In FY24, the reserve price for fair and average quality wheat was INR 2,150 per 100 kg and for reduced specification wheat was INR 2,125 per 100 kg.

Prices of basmati sella RICE at Vashi were steady at INR 6,000-INR 6,100 per 100 kg, Vora said. Prices of the 1121 basmati rice variety and broken rice were steady at INR 7,800 per 100 kg and INR 2,700 per 100 kg, respectively, Vora said.

He said farmers in Punjab and Haryana may shift to "moti chawal (rice)", which is non-basmati rice, from basmati as the government has increased the minimum support price for the kharif marketing year starting October. The minimum support price of paddy common and grade A varieties has been increased by 3.0% each to INR 2,369 per 100 kg and INR 2,389 per 100 kg, respectively, for the kharif marketing year 2025-26 (Oct-Sept).

Prices of sona masoori rice were also steady at INR 5,200 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Andhra Pradesh's Vijayawada, local trader Ravi Shankar said. He expects the price to move by INR 100-INR 200 per 100 kg.

Prices of MAIZE in Indore were steady at INR 2,320 per 100 kg, Kochar said. With the next crop due to arrive only after October, he expects the price to rise to INR 2,400 per 100 kg in the near term.  End
