MUMBAI - The International Grains Council has projected global food grain output in 2025-26 at a record 2,377 million tonnes, 2 million tonnes more than 2,375 million tonnes projected in May, according to its grain market report released Thursday. The increase in overall production is mainly on the expectation of higher production of maize, the council said.

The council has also increased its estimate for 2024-25 global grain output by 3 million tonnes from last month to 2,313 million tonnes in June. The total grain production forecast for 2025-26 is 3% higher than the council's 2024-25 estimate of 2,313 million tonnes.

The council has also raised its projection for global consumption in 2025-26 to 2,373 million tonnes from 2,372 million tonnes estimated in May. Global consumption in 2025-26 is estimated to be higher by 2% on year due to an increase in feed, industrial and food uses.

The council has projected global carryover stocks for 2025-26 at 586 million tonnes, up from 585 million tonnes projected in May. The council has also raised its forecast for global trade in 2025-26 to 430 million tonnes from 428 million tonnes in May owing to an upgrade in wheat shipments.

World rice production for 2025-26 is seen higher by 3 million tonnes from last month at 544 million tonnes in June. The council has also increased its estimate for 2024-25 rice production to 541 million tonnes from 540 million tonnes in May.

Boosted by larger crops in South America, 2025-26 global soybean output is seen 1% higher on year at 428 million tonnes. Global soybean consumption in 2025-26 is expected to rise by 18 million tonnes from last year to 429 million tonnes. This is likely to weigh on the carryover stocks for 2025-26, which are estimated at 82 million tonnes, down from 84 million tonnes seen the previous year.

The council has raised its 2025-26 wheat production estimate by 2 million tonnes from May to 808 million tonnes in June. The estimate is also higher than 799 million tonnes seen for 2024-25. Consumption is seen slightly higher at 814 million tonnes in 2025-26 compared to 813 million tonnes pegged in May. Carryover stocks for 2025-26 are seen at 264 million tonnes, up 2 million tonnes from the previous month's estimate.  End
