Kharif acreage in Maharashtra up 23% on year, maize up 75%

MUMBAI – The area under kharif crops in Maharashtra stood at 3.38 million hectares as of Jun. 20, up 23% on year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The area under kharif crops in the same period a year ago was 2.75 million hectares. Maize acreage so far rose more than 75% on year to 366,636 hectares, the report showed.
The area under paddy so far stood at 58,583 hectares against 58,295 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The acreage of bajra rose to 108,446 hectares from 54,622 hectares.
Tur acreage in the state rose to 251,006 hectares from 175,244 hectares a year ago, according to the report. The area under moong rose to 85,164 hectares from 42,828 hectares a year ago, while that under urad rose to 137,519 hectares from 50,445 hectares. The total area under all pulses was 478,711 hectares, up from 271,815 hectares a year ago.
The total area under all oilseeds so far was 1.18 million hectares, up from 1.0 million hectares a year ago, the report showed. Under oilseeds, the acreage of soybean rose to 1.15 million hectares from 965,678 hectares, and that of groundnut fell to 26,229 hectares from 35,000 hectares.
Cotton acreage in the state progressed to 1.15 million hectares from 1.13 hectares a year ago, the report showed.
Kharif crops are sown at the beginning of the southwest monsoon season around June and harvested around October. The water level in the dams of Maharashtra is at 42.4% of the live storage capacity as of Friday, compared with 20.3% a year ago, according to data from the state water resources department. End
