MUMBAI – Wheat prices were mixed across key markets in the country Thursday, traders said. They expect prices to rise due to reduced arrivals in domestic markets due to ongoing heavy rainfall in the country. Prices of rice and maize were steady due to a lack of new cues, traders said.

Prices of WHEAT at Kota in Rajasthan were steady from the previous day at INR 2,425-INR 2,430 per 100 kilograms, local trader Aniket Mehta said. Prices of the grain at Indore in Madhya Pradesh rose INR 5 to INR 2,730 per 100 kg due to low arrivals, local trader Gaurav Kochar said. Prices of wheat in Navi Mumbai's Vashi market were steady from the previous day at INR 2,725 per 100 kg, local wholesale dealer Devendra Vora said. In Delhi, prices of the grain were up by INR 20 to INR 2,750 per 100 kg, traders said.

Arrivals in Kota were steady from the previous day at 4,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), but lower than the 10,000 bags seen during last week, Mehta said. Monsoon has started in Rajasthan, because of which farmers are not bringing wheat to the market, Mehta said. The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert in east Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh due to very heavy rainfall. Moreover, there is demand for wheat in the market, which is also supporting prices, Mehta said.

Mehta said the market is awaiting the government's announcement on open market sales of wheat. Pending the announcement, wheat prices are likely to increase due to low arrivals and firm demand, he said. Traders expect the government to start the open market sales scheme for wheat in mid-July.

Prices of basmati sella RICE variety at Vashi were steady at INR 6,000-INR 6,100 per 100 kg, Vora said. Prices of the 1121 basmati rice variety and broken rice were steady at INR 7,800 per 100 kg and INR 2,700 per 100 kg, Vora said.

Prices of sona masoori rice were also steady at INR 5,200 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Andhra Pradesh's Vijayawada, local trader Ravi Shankar said. He expects prices to move in a range of INR 100-INR 200 per 100 kg.

Prices of MAIZE in Indore were steady at INR 2,320 per 100 kg, Kochar said. With the next crop due to arrive only after October, he expects the price to rise to INR 2,400 per 100 kg in the near term.  End
