MUMBAI – Chana and masur prices were steady Thursday in key spot markets across the country, while tur prices

were steady in some markets but fell in others due to sluggish demand, traders said. Prices of chana and masur are likely to rise in the short term due to a fall in arrivals, they said.

CHANA prices at Indore in Madhya Pradesh were steady at INR 6,000-INR 6,100 per 100 kg, said Dinesh Mangal, a local trader. Though there is some demand, it is not substantial enough to push up the prices, he said. Chana prices are expected to rise in the short term as chana arrivals have fallen, he said. Farmers are currently too busy with kharif crop sowing to bring their produce to the market, he said.

Prices are likely to rise by INR 200-INR 300 per 100 kg in the medium term as arrivals are likely to fall further, and due to seasonal demand during the monsoon, Mangal said. Prices will also be supported due to festival demand in August, he said.

Chana prices were steady in Delhi at INR 5,800-INR 5,825 per 100 kg, traders said.

TUR prices at Solapur in Maharashtra fell by INR 50 to INR 6,800-INR 6,900 per 100 kg, said Rahul Srinivas, a local trader. About 22–23 trucks with 20,000-25,000 kg of tur each arrived in the market, he said. Prices fell due to sluggish demand, he said. Demand from millers usually drops towards the end of the month, he said.

Though prices are not expected to fall steeply, an upward trend is also unlikely, Srinivas said. "If prices of imports from Myanmar rise, then rates of domestic tur will rise as well. Otherwise, there is no reason for an upward trend in domestic prices," he said.

Prices of tur at Katni in Madhya Pradesh were steady at INR 7,100-INR 7,200 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

MASUR prices in Indore were steady at INR 6,200-INR 6,300 per 100 kg, Mangal said. Prices could rise by INR 100-INR 150 per 100 kg in the near term due to a fall in the arrivals, he said. Arrivals of the rabi crop usually slow down during June and July as stocks with farmers are low, and they get busy with kharif sowing, he said.

Prices of the choti variety of masur at Lalitpur in Uttar Pradesh were steady at INR 5,800-INR 6,100 per 100 kg, according to the association. Prices of the moti variety of masur in Lalitpur were also steady at INR 6,000-INR 6,650 per 100 kg.  End
