MUMBAI – India's production of coffee in 2025-26 (Oct-Sept) is likely to fall 2.4% on year to 6.0 million bags (1 bag = 60 kilograms), according to USDA Foreign Agricultural Service. Arabica production is seen declining marginally to 1.35 million bags from 1.40 million bags a year ago, while Robusta variety is seen at 4.70 million bags, down from 4.80 million bags, the agency said in its June report.

The global output of coffee is projected to rise 2.5% on year to 178.68 million bags in 2025-26, it said in the half-yearly report. Major contribution to increase in production is seen coming from Brazil, Indonesia, and Ethiopia. "Colombia output is expected to retreat by 700,000 bags to 12.50 million as excessive rains and cloud cover disrupted the flowering period to lowered yields. While these conditions were favourable for coffee leaf rust to proliferate, overall detection rates have been relatively low due to the high presence of disease-resistant varieties," the report said.

World exports of coffee are seen rising to 148.53 million bags in 2025-26 from 147.16 million bags in the previous year. However, those from India are seen down at 6.0 million bag from 6.21 million bags. India is likely to export 3.56 million bags of beans, and 2.42 million bags of solubles.

While world consumption of coffee is projected to rise to a record 169.36 million bags in 2025-26 from 166.52 million bags a year ago, India's consumption is likely to go up to 1.36 million bags from 1.30 million bags, the report said.

"With global consumption forecast at a record 169.4 million bags, ending inventories are expected to remain tight at 22.8 million bags. In response, coffee prices as measured by the International Coffee Organization (ICO) monthly composite price index increased over 90 percent in the last 2 years," the USDA report said.

The agency has lowered its estimate of world coffee output in 2024-25, as given in December, to 174.40 million bags, down by 500,000 bags. It has similarly cut its previous estimate of coffee bean exports in 2024-25 by 800,000 bags to 121.50 million bags.  End
