Telangana kharif acreage dn 17% on yr at 3 mln acres as of Wed

MUMBAI – Sowing of kharif crops has commenced in Telangana, with nearly 3.0 million acres (1 acre = 0.4 hectares) covered as of Wednesday, down nearly 17% on year, according to the first kharif sowing report released by the state agriculture department. The area under kharif crops a year ago was 3.6 million acres. 

 

The area under tur so far was 137,269 acres, down from 164,659 acres a year ago, the report showed. Moong acreage fell to 11,265 acres from 23,096 acres. The total area under all pulses declined to 150,885 acres from 191,245 acres a year ago.

 

The area under paddy stood at 116,259 acres, up from 64,975 acres a year ago, according to the report. The acreage of maize rose to 117,309 acres from 103,738 acres a year ago while that of jowar rose to 18,314 acres from 16,168 acres.

 

The total area under all oilseeds in the state was 147,033 acres, down from 199,527 acres a year ago, the report showed. Under oilseeds, the acreage of soybean fell to 146,890 acres from 196,636 acres. Soybean accounts for most of the acreage under oilseeds in the state.

 

Cotton acreage in the state fell to 2.3 million acres from 2.6 million acres, the report showed.

 

Kharif crops are sown once the southwest monsoon begins in India. In Telangana, sowing of kharif crops begins in June while harvest ends as late as December for some kharif crops. 

 

The water level in reservoirs across Telangana was 406.3 thousand million cubic metres, as of Wednesday, compared with 230.0 thousand million cubic metres a year ago, the report showed.  End
