Kharif acreage in Gujarat up 84% on yr at 1.83 mln ha as of Mon

MUMBAI – The area under kharif crops in Gujarat stood at 1.83 million hectares as of Monday, up more that 84% on year from a year ago, according to a release by the state agriculture department. A year ago, kharif sowing had covered 993,606 hectares in the state.
The normal acreage of kharif crops, which is the average of the past three years, is 8.56 million hectares, of which 21.4% has been covered so far. Hharif crops are sown at the beginning of the southwest monsoon season around June and harvested around October.
The total area under all oilseeds so far was 957,325 hectares, up from 327,354 hectares a year ago, according to the report. Under oilseeds, the acreage of groundnut rose to 906,019 hectares from 323,687 hectares, while that of soybean rose to 50,623 hectares from 2,795 hectares.
The area under paddy rose to 1,090 hectares from 414 hectares a year ago, according to the report. Bajra acreage rose to 1,934 hectares from 506 hectares. The acreage of maize stood at 663 hectares, against 683 hectares a year ago.
Tur acreage in the state was 3,178 hectares, up from 3,090 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area under moong rose to 635 hectares from 479 hectares. The total area under all pulses was 4,145 hectares, up from 3,914 hectares a year ago.
The area under cotton rose to 757,842 hectares from 580,128 hectares a year ago, according to the report. The acreage of vegetables rose to 38,231 hectares from 26,808 hectares. End
