MUMBAI - The country's horticulture crop output in 2024-25 (Jul-Jun) has been pegged at 367.7 million tonnes, nearly 4% higher on year, according to the second advance estimate released by the Department of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Wednesday. The country's horticulture output was at 354.7 million tonnes in 2023-24. The second advance estimate for horticulture output is 5.6 million tonnes higher than the first advance estimate.

 

Above-normal southwest monsoon rainfall in 2024 aided the production of horticulture crops grown during kharif and rabi seasons. The monsoon rainfall also helps rabi crops by increasing soil moisture and replenishing reservoir levels. During the southwest monsoon running from June to September, the country had got an average rainfall of 934.8 mm, 8?ove the normal of 868.6 mm for the season. 

 

The total vegetable output in 2024-25 has been pegged at 219.7 million tonnes, up 6% on year. Onion production for the year is seen at 30.8 million tonnes, 27% more than the previous year. Potato production is projected at 60.2 million tonnes, up 5.5% from 57.1 million tonnes a year before. Tomato output has been pegged at 20.8 million tonnes, down 3% from 21.3 million tonnes a year ago, according to the estimates.  

 

The government has estimated spices output at 12.4 million tonnes for the year, slightly lower than 12.5 million tonnes a year ago. Turmeric production in 2024-25 is estimated at 1.2 million tonnes, up from 1.1 million tonnes a year ago.

 

The total output of fruits in 2024-25 has been pegged at 114.5 million tonnes, up 1% from 113.0 million tonnes in the previous year.
