MUMBAI – Wheat prices were mixed across key markets Wednesday, with a rise seen in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, due to lower arrivals and firm demand, traders said. Rice and maize prices were largely steady from the previous day as markets lacked fresh cues, they added.
Prices of WHEAT in Indore rose slightly by INR 20 to INR 2,725 per 100 kilograms due to low arrivals, local trader Gaurav Kochar said. Prices in Kota, Rajasthan, remained steady from the previous day at INR 2,425-INR 2,430 per 100 kg, local trader Aniket Mehta said. Although arrivals rose by 1,000 bags to 4,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) Wednesday, they have been lower than the 10,000 bags seen during last week, according to Mehta.
It has started raining in the state because of which farmers are not bringing wheat to the market, Mehta said. The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert in east Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh due to very heavy rainfall. Moreover, there is demand for wheat in the market which is also supporting prices, Mehta said.
Prices of wheat in Navi Mumbai's Vashi market were steady from the previous day at INR 2,725 per 100 kg, local wholesale dealer Devendra Vora said. In Delhi, prices of the staple grain were slightly down by INR 10 at INR 2,730 per 100 kg, according to traders. Vora said prices are likely to be steady in June and any movement in prices can be seen only when the government announces the date for open market sales of wheat.
Prices of basmati sella RICE variety at the Vashi market were steady at INR 6,000-INR 6,100 per 100 kg, Vora said. Prices of the 1121 basmati rice variety were also steady at INR 7,800 per 100 kg. Prices of broken rice remained steady at INR 2,700 per 100 kg, Vora added.
Price of sona masoori rice remained steady at INR 5,200 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Andhra Pradesh's Vijayawada, local trader Ravi Shankar said. He expects prices are likely to remain at the current levels with a movement of INR 100-INR 200 on either side.
Price of MAIZE in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, was steady from the previous day at INR 2,320 per 100 kg, Kochar said. With the next crop due for arrival only after October, he expects maize price to rise to INR 2,400 per 100 kg in the near term. End
