MUMBAI – Prices of chana rose on Wednesday, while those of tur and urad were steady in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Prices of chana rose due to seasonal demand and low arrivals, they said. Prices of tur were steady amid a lack of cues, they said. Prices of urad are likely to rise in the short term due to the government's procurement, they said.
CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh rose by INR 50 from Tuesday to INR 6,000-INR 6,050 per 100 kg, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Prices rose due to seasonal demand, typically seen during the monsoon, he said. Demand for the legume sees an uptick during monsoon as people consume more chana and besan-based snacks, he said.
Prices are likely to increase in the short term as arrivals are slowing down, Kochar said. Currently, many farmers are too occupied with kharif crop sowing to bring their produce to the markets, he said.
Prices of chana in Jaipur, Rajasthan, rose by INR 25 from the previous day to INR 5,775 per 100 kg, traders said.
TUR prices in Solapur, Maharashtra, were steady at INR 6,850-INR 6,950 per 100 kg, traders said. About 25–26 trucks carrying 20,000-25,000 kg of tur each arrived in the market, they said. Prices of tur in Delhi were steady at INR 7,100-INR 7,150 per 100 kg, they said.
Prices are steady amid a lack of cues, they said. Currently, prices of domestic tur are mostly dependent on the rates of imports from Myanmar, they said. If prices of imports rise or fall, domestic rates are likely to follow suit, they said.
As of Friday, the area sown under tur across the country was lower at 248,000 hectares compared with 261,000 hectares in the same period a year ago, data from the agriculture department showed. Though the sowing of kharif tur for the upcoming Jul-Jun crop year has started out weak, it is likely to pick up next month, the India Pulses and Grains Association said in its weekly report Monday.
URAD prices in Chandausi, Uttar Pradesh, were steady at INR 7,075-INR 7,100 per 100 kg, according to the association. Prices of urad in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, were also steady at INR 7,100 per 100 kg. Prices are likely to be supported by procurement of the summer urad crop by the Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh governments, traders said.
The Centre on Tuesday approved the procurement of urad in the two states under the price support scheme. The move aims to ensure farmers get fair prices for their produce, according to the release by the agriculture ministry. The minimum support price for urad has been fixed at INR 7,400 per 100 kg for the current 2024-25 kharif marketing season. End
