NEW DELHI - The Union Cabinet Wednesday approved the establishment of the International Potato Centre's South Asia regional centre in Agra, Uttar Pradesh. The goal is to boost the country's production of potatoes and sweet potatoes.

The regional centre, to be set up at Singna in Agra district, aims to increase food and nutrition security, enhance farmers' income, and create employment opportunities by improving the productivity of potato and sweet potato, their post-harvest management, and value addition, the government said in a press release.

The decision, according to the release, is expected to unlock the potential of the potato sector in India, which has the capacity to generate significant employment opportunities in production, processing, packaging, transportation, marketing, and value chain. The regional centre will develop high-yielding, nutrient-rich, climate-resilient varieties of potato and sweet potato, "accelerating the sustainable development of these sectors not only in India, but also in the South Asia region through world-class science and innovation", as per the release.  End
