NEW DELHI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in the key markets of Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra remained steady on Wednesday amid poor demand and lack of selling pressure, traders said. Market participants now await the Centre's announcement of the July sugar sales quota later this week.
Sugar prices remained unchanged in Uttar Pradesh, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. "Despite the month-end nearing, mills are not under selling pressure," Gupta added. According to traders, some unsold quota for June remains, but mills are in a wait-and-watch mode as prices are already at relatively low levels. Demand from bulk buyers such as soft drink and ice cream manufacturers usually dips during June and July due to the southwest monsoon.
The government fixes the maximum quantity of sugar available for sale every month to check prices and helps mills pay sugarcane farmers. Last July, the sales quota was set at 2.4 million tonnes.
Sugar prices in Maharashtra also remained steady amid poor demand and absence of selling pressure, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. "There are still five more days left. Mills are not in a hurry to sell," Kuvadia said.
The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:
--Flat at INR 3,820-INR 3,920 per 100 kg in west Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 3,830-INR 3,925 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 3,942-INR 4,052 per 100 kg in Mumbai
--Flat at INR 3,780-INR 3,840 per 100 kg in Kolhapur
At 1448 IST, sugar prices on the Intercontinental Exchange were up 0.4% at 16.42 cents per pound. Prices rose, tracking gains in crude oil prices. Higher crude oil prices make ethanol blending more attractive, reducing sucrose diversion for sugar production.
However, the upside was capped by expectations of higher global sugar output. Brazil's sugar production in 2025-26 is estimated to rise 2.3% to a record 44.7 million tonnes. Sugar production in India in 2025-26 is projected to rise 25% to 35.3 million tonnes due to a favourable monsoon and higher sugarcane acreage. Thailand's 2025-26 sugar production is expected to increase 2% to 10.3 million tonnes. End
