MUMBAI – Wheat, rice, and maize prices were steady in key markets across the country Tuesday due to lack of new cues, traders said. Market participants expect wheat prices to remain steady in the near term, while they expect maize prices to rise due to low arrivals. Meanwhile, wheat arrivals in Rajasthan's Kota market were down Tuesday due to heavy rains in the state.
Prices of WHEAT in Kota were steady from the previous day at INR 2,430-INR 2,440 per 100 kg, according to local trader Aniket Mehta. However, arrivals were lower by 2,000 bags at 3,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), Mehta said. It has started raining in the state because of which farmers are not bringing wheat to the market, he said.
The India Meteorological Department said conditions are favourable for the monsoon to advance over parts of Rajasthan, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi during next 36 hours. It has issued an orange alert for east Rajasthan for Tuesday due to very heavy rainfall. It also said very heavy rain is likely to continue over parts of Rajasthan during this week.
Prices of wheat in Navi Mumbai's Vashi market were steady at INR 2,725 per 100 kg, local wholesale dealer Devendra Vora said. In Delhi, prices of the staple grain were also steady from the previous day at INR 2,740 per 100 kg, according to traders. Vora said prices are likely to remain stable till the end of this month.
Rahul Chauhan, director at IGrain, said the government is likely to start the wheat open market sales before Diwali as prices are range-bound currently and are expected to remain steady in the near term too. Now that market knows the government has enough wheat stocks for open market sales, prices are unlikely to rise anytime soon, he added. However, a few market participants also expect the government to start the open market sales of wheat for the rabi marketing year 2025-26 (Apr-Mar) in July.
The Food Corp. of India has procured over 30 million tonnes of wheat for the central pool during 2025-26. This has resulted in a disbursement of INR 700.00 billion to 2.38 million farmers as payment of minimum support price.
The price of basmati sella RICE at the Vashi market was steady at INR 6,000-INR 6,100 per 100 kg, Vora said. The price of 1121 basmati rice was also steady at INR 7,800 per 100 kg. The price of broken rice remained stable at INR 2,700 per 100 kg, Vora said. The price of sona masoori rice was also steady at INR 5,200 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Andhra Pradesh's Vijayawada, local trader Ravi Shankar said.
Prices of MAIZE in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady from the previous day at INR 2,320 per 100 kg, a local trader Gaurav Kochar said. He expects maize prices to rise to INR 2,400 per 100 kg in the near term due less supply in the domestic market. End
