NEW DELHI - Ex-mill prices of sugar remained steady in key markets of Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra on Tuesday due to lack of fresh triggers, said traders. Traders expect prices to remain largely the same for the rest of the week.

Despite weak demand, mills in Uttar Pradesh kept prices steady as they are already at relatively low levels, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. Demand from bulk buyers such as soft drink and ice cream manufacturers usually dips during June and July due to the southwest monsoon.

Sugar prices in Maharashtra were steady amid a lack of fresh triggers, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Prices are likely to remain at the current levels for the rest of the week, he added.

The sugar market awaits the July sugar sales quota announcement by the Centre later in the week. The government fixes the maximum quantity of sugar available for sale every month to check prices and helps mills pay sugarcane farmers. Last July, the sales quota was set at 2.4 million tonnes.

The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Flat at INR 3,820-INR 3,920 per 100 kg in west Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 3,830-INR 3,925 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 3,942-INR 4,052 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Flat at INR 3,780-INR 3,840 per 100 kg in Kolhapur

At 1429 IST, sugar prices on the Intercontinental Exchange were largely flat at 16.03 cents per pound.  End

US$1 = INR 85.97
