Karnataka kharif acreage up 5% YoY at 3.46 mln ha; maize up 10%

MUMBAI – The area under kharif crops in Karnataka was 3.46 million hectares as of Friday, up nearly 5% on year from 3.30 million hectares a year ago, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Maize acreage rose more than 10% to 992,800 hectares, the report showed.
The area sown under paddy rose to 64,100 hectares from 62,000 hectares sown last year, the report showed. The acreage under bajra also rose to 64,000 hectares from 53,000 hectares a year ago, while that of jowar fell to 25,500 hectares from 34,000 hectares last year.
The acreage under tur so far stood at 488,800 hectares, down from 573,100 hectares sown a year ago, according to the report. Moong acreage rose to 357,700 hectares from 335,500 hectares last year, and that of urad fell to 69,400 hectares from 73,300 hectares a year ago. The total area sown under all pulses was 975,900 hectares, down from 1.04 million hectares a year ago.
The total area sown under all oilseeds in the state fell to 394,400 hectares from 429,700 hectares sown in the previous year, the report showed. Under oilseeds, the acreage under soybean was 278,400 hectares, down from 303,300 hectares a year ago. The acreage under groundnut also fell to 65,700 hectares from 82,100 hectares last year.
Sugarcane acreage in the state so far rose to 518,300 hectares from 455,400 hectares a year ago, according to the report. The acreage under cotton also rose to 335,800 hectares, up from 240,500 hectares last year.
The sowing of kharif crops in Karnataka usually begins in June and ends by September. The main kharif crops grown in the state include maize, tur, soybean, sugarcane, horse gram, cotton, red chillies, and turmeric. End
