MUMBAI – Prices of oilseeds were mixed in key domestic markets on Monday. Mustard prices rose in some markets due to lower production while those of soybean and groundnut were steady from the previous day, traders said. Demand for oilseeds was largely subdued because of lower demand and lower consumption. Traders expect demand to improve during the festival season in September.
Prices of MUSTARD seed in Jaipur, Rajasthan, rose by INR 100 to INR 6,900 per 100 kilogram, according to Marudhar Trading Agency. The all-India arrivals of mustard were at 475,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), according to traders. Prices rose Monday due to lower production in the recent rabi season and continuous rains in key states which led to lower supply in markets, traders said.
Traders expect mustard prices to rise further in the long term, driven by the prospect of lower output. The government's third advance estimates peg mustard seed production for the crop year 2024–25 (Jul–Jun) at 12.6 million tonnes, down from 13.3 million tonnes in the previous year.
GROUNDNUT prices in Gondal, Gujarat, were steady from the previous day at INR 4,700-INR 5,700 per 100 kg, said Ashok Virvani, a trader from Gujarat. Groundnut demand remains weak due to the availability of cheaper imported palm oil, which is commonly used as a substitute for groundnut oil in cooking.
SOYBEAN prices in Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh, held steady at INR 3,900–INR 4,300 per 100 kg on Monday, with arrivals unchanged at 3,300 bags, according to local trader Narendra Porwal. Similarly, prices in the Gondal market remained steady at INR 3,800–INR 4,000 per 100 kg, said trader Virvani. Soybean prices are likely to move downwards over the next three to four months, Virvani said.
