MUMBAI – Maize prices rose slightly Monday and those of wheat and rice were steady in most key markets, traders said. According to traders, maize prices are likely to increase further from the current levels due to low supply in domestic markets.

The prices of MAIZE in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, rose by INR 20 to INR 2,320 per 100 kg due to low arrivals in markets, a local trader Gaurav Kochar said. He expects maize prices to rise to INR 2,400 per 100 kg in the near term due less supply in the domestic market.

Fresh maize crop arrivals will start only in October, which will leave the market with low supply till then, traders said. As of Jun. 13, the all-India acreage of maize was down nearly 16% on year at 360,000 hectares. While the acreage is lower, traders and experts say that by the end of the sowing period, area under the grain will increase as farmers see better returns compared to other crops like cotton, tur, and soybean.

Prices of WHEAT in Kota, Rajasthan, were steady from the previous day at INR 2,430-INR 2,440 per 100 kg, according to local trader Aniket Mehta. However, arrivals were slightly lower by 1,000 bags at 5,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), Mehta said. It has started raining in the state because of which farmers are not bringing wheat to the market, he said.

The India Meteorological Department said conditions are favourable for the monsoon to advance over parts of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi in the next two days. It has issued an orange alert for Rajasthan for Monday due to very heavy rainfall in the state.

Prices of wheat in Navi Mumbai's Vashi market were steady at INR 2,725 per 100 kg, local wholesale dealer Devendra Vora said. In Delhi, prices of the staple grain were slightly down by INR 10 from the previous day at INR 2,740 per 100 kg, according to traders. Vora said prices are likely to remain stable till the end of this month. Traders expect the government to start open market sales of wheat for the rabi marketing year 2025-26 (Apr-Mar) in July.

The Food Corp. of India has procured over 30 million tonnes of wheat for the central pool during 2025-26. This has resulted in disbursement of INR 700.00 billion to 2.38 million farmers as payment of minimum support price.

The price of basmati sella RICE at the Vashi market was steady at INR 6,000-INR 6,100 per 100 kg, Vora said. The price of 1121 basmati rice was also steady at INR 7,800 per 100 kg. The price of broken rice remained stable at INR 2,700 per 100 kg, Vora said. The price of sona masoori rice was also steady at INR 5,200 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Andhra Pradesh's Vijayawada, local trader Ravi Shankar said.  End
