NEW DELHI – Ex-mill prices of sugar fell in the key markets of Uttar Pradesh on Monday due to tepid demand and selling pressure as the month draws to a close. Meanwhile, rates were steady in Maharashtra, said traders.

Mills in Uttar Pradesh reduced rates by INR 20 per 100 kg due to lower demand and selling pressure, said Naresh Gupta, a trader based in north India. "Prices fell today due to selling pressure. Let's see if mills will sustain these levels," Gupta said.

The government has allowed mills across the country to sell 2.30 million tonnes of sugar in June. The government fixes the maximum quantity of sugar available for sale every month to check prices and help mills pay sugarcane farmers.

Sugar prices in Maharashtra were largely steady as lack of selling pressure offset poor demand, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Prices are likely to remain at the current levels as demand is typically low in June.

The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Down by INR 20 at INR 3,820-INR 3,920 per 100 kg in west Uttar Pradesh

--Down by INR 20 at INR 3,830-INR 3,925 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 3,942-INR 4,052 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Flat at INR 3,780-INR 3,840 per 100 kg in Kolhapur

At 1608 IST, sugar prices on the Intercontinental Exchange were up 1% at 16.26 cents per pound. Sugar prices were up tracking rise in crude oil prices. Higher crude oil prices make ethanol blending more attractive, thereby reducing sucrose diversion for sugar production.

However, the gains were limited by expectations of higher global sugar output. Brazil's 2025-26 sugar production is estimated to rise 2.3% to a record 44.7 million tonnes. India's 2025-26 sugar production is projected to rise 25% to 35.3 million tonnes due to a favorable monsoon and increased sugarcane acreage. Thailand's 2025-26 sugar production is expected to increased 2% to 10.3 million tonnes.  End
