MUMBAI – Urad prices are expected to rise in the short term due to a drop in arrivals, with farmers shifting focus to kharif sowing, the India Pulses and Grains Association said in its weekly report on Monday. Prices may also rise due to rising seasonal demand and firm rates in overseas markets, the association said.

Millers are likely to increase their purchases to fulfil deliveries in Delhi by the end of the month, the association said. Currently, stocks of the legume with millers and stockists are low, it said.

Prices of urad rose in the week ended Saturday as consumption demand in south India rose, the association said. The Madhya Pradesh government's summer crop procurement commenced on Thursday, which also supported market sentiment, it said. Prices of domestic urad also rose tracking the rise in prices of tur imported from Myanmar. Prices of imported tur rose due to tight supplies and a rise in rates in Myanmar, it said.

In the week ended Saturday, prices of urad in Chandausi, Uttar Pradesh, rose by INR 50 from the previous week to INR 7,100 per 10 kg, according to the association. Prices of urad imported into Chennai rose by INR 125 from the previous week to INR 6,725 per 100 kg, according to the association.  End
