MUMBAI – Chana prices are likely to rise in the short term due to a slowdown in rabi crop arrivals and higher seasonal demand during the monsoon, the India Pulses and Grains Association said in a weekly report on Monday. However, prices may not rise steeply due to the availability of yellow peas, the association said.

The government has extended chana procurement till mid-July as current buying is below the target. So far, 300,000-315,000 tonnes have been procured. This is the second extension, after moving the deadline from May 31 to Jun. 30 earlier.

Prices of chana rose in the week ended Saturday due to a drop in arrivals as farmers began focusing on kharif sowing, the association said. Prices were also supported as stockists refused to sell at lower prices. Selective buying by millers for good-quality chana driven by the seasonal demand for chana dal, or processed chana, also supported market sentiment, it said.

In the week ended Saturday, prices of chana in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, rose by INR 175 from the previous week to INR 5,925-INR 5,975 per 100 kg, according to the association. Prices in Akola, Maharashtra, rose by INR 125 from the previous week to INR 5,900-INR 5,925 per 100 kg.  End
