MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in the key markets of Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra were steady Friday, said traders. Prices have been steady for the past two to three days despite poor demand, as prices are already on the lower side, they said.
Mills in Uttar Pradesh kept prices steady as they are already significantly lower, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. In the resale market, prices fell by INR 5-INR 10 per 100 kg due to poor demand. Moreover, resellers are hesitant to stock up sugar as it might get spoiled due to moisture absorption during monsoon, Gupta added.
Mills in Uttar Pradesh have already lowered prices by INR 70-INR 80 per 100 kg this month, Gupta said. Demand is need based as there are no festivals or weddings this month, he said. Prices could fall further in the coming days if mills are in a hurry to meet the sales quota for June, Gupta added.
Mills in Maharashtra also held prices steady, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Prices are likely to remain at the current levels as demand is unlikely to pick up this month, Kuvadia said. Demand for sugar is typically low in June, he added.
The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:
--Flat at INR 3,830-INR 3,940 per 100 kg in west Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 3,830-INR 3,940 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 3,800-INR 3,850 per 100 kg in Kolhapur
--Flat at INR 3,963-INR 4,052 per 100 kg in Mumbai
At 1929 IST, sugar prices on the Intercontinental Exchange were up 1.6% at 16.57 cents per pound. Global prices have got some support from reduced sugar production in Brazil. UNICA, Brazilian sugar industry associate, said that the cumulative 2025-26 Brazil center-south sugar output until May was down by 11.6% on year at 6.9 million tonnes. Last month, Conab, Brazil's government crop forecasting agency, said 2024-25 Brazil sugar production fell 3.4% to 44.1 million tonnes, citing lower sugarcane yields due to drought and excessive heat.
