Meanwhile, an orange alert for heavy rainfall has been issued for eight of the 36 subdivisions in the country for Friday. These are east Rajasthan, west Madhya Pradesh, central Maharashtra, east Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Assam and Meghalaya, and Nagaland-Manipur-Mizoram-Tripura, the weather department said. An orange alert indicates rainfall of 115.6-204.4 millimetres in a single day.

Owing to the severe rainfall across various parts of the country, the weather department has issued advisory for protection of crops. In Gangetic West Bengal, IMD has asked farmers to ensure proper drainage in already sown rice nurseries, fields of sesame, jute and groundnut to prevent waterlogging and cover the young seedlings of kharif rice with plastic sheets or agro-shade nets to protect them from heavy rains.

In Meghalaya, it has advised farmers to postpone nursery sowing of rice especially in valleys. Proper drainage is also required in the fields of maize, ginger, french beans, cowpea, vegetables and around rice nurseries to prevent water logging.

The weather bureau has also asked fishermen not to venture over central and adjoining north, south Arabian Sea, northeast Arabian Sea along and off Gujarat-Maharashtra coasts till Tuesday. Fishermen are also advised not to venture over the Andaman Sea from Sunday to Tuesday.

In terms of temperatures, no significant change in maximum temperatures is likely over remaining parts of the country, the weather bureau said. Hot and humid conditions very likely in pockets of Tamil Nadu till Sunday and coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam and Rayalaseema till Sunday, IMD said.  End
