MUMBAI – The Cotton Association of India has raised its estimate for the country's cotton production in 2024-25 (Oct-Sept) to 30.1 million bales (1 bale = 170 kg) from 29.1 million bales earlier. The association said 28.5 million bales of cotton have been pressed as of May 31. The cotton production in 2023-24 was 32.8 million bales.

 

The association updates its estimates almost every month, based on information from its members in 11 cotton-growing states and other trade sources. Cotton production in the north zone, which comprises Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan, is pegged at 2.9 million bales in 2024-25. Output in the central zone, which includes Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh, is seen at 18.0 million bales.

 

Production in the south zone, comprising Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu, is seen at 8.7 million bales, according to the association. Odisha and other states are likely to account for 385,000 bales and 200,000 bales of cotton production, respectively.

 

The total supply of cotton till the end of the 2024-25 season is estimated at 37.0 million bales, against 37.2 million bales in the previous season. The association has estimated imports in 2024-25 at 3.9 million bales, up from 1.5 million bales in 2023-24. It has pegged exports at 1.7 million bales, against 2.8 million bales a year ago. The 2024-25 season is estimated to close with an ending stock of 4.8 million bales, against 3.0 million bales a year ago. 

 

As of May 31, the total supply of cotton in India was 34.2 million bales and the demand was 20.8 million bales. According to the association, India exported 1.5 mln bales of cotton and imported 2.6 million bales as of May 31.
