Rice, maize steady in key mkts; wheat traders await govt sales

MUMBAI – Prices of rice and maize were steady Thursday while prices of wheat were mixed in key spot markets of the country, traders said. Wheat prices are likely to remain steady this month and any movement can be expected only when the government announces date for open market sales.

 

Prices of WHEAT in Navi Mumbai's Vashi market were steady from the previous day at INR 2,725 per 100 kg, local wholesale dealer Devendra Vora said. In Delhi, prices of the staple grain rose by INR 5 to INR 2,735 per 100 kg, according to traders. Vora said prices are likely to be steady in June and any movement in prices can be seen only when the government announces the date for open market sales of wheat.

 

Market expects the government to start open market sales of wheat by early July. In 2025-26 (Apr-Mar), traders expect the government to sell 8 million to 10 million tonnes of wheat under the scheme. The reserve price of wheat under the open market sales scheme in 2025-26 is seen at INR 2,475-INR 2,500 per 100 kg, according to Ajay Goyal, chairman of the Wheat Products Promotion Society.

 

In FY25, the government sold 3 million tonnes of wheat under the open market sales scheme with a reserve price of INR 2,325 per 100 kg. In FY24, wheat sales under the open market scheme were at an all-time high of 9.4 million tonnes. Last year, the reserve price for fair and average quality wheat was INR 2,150 per 100 kg and that for reduced specification wheat INR 2,125 per 100 kg.

   

Prices of basmati sella RICE variety in Vashi market were steady at INR 6,000-INR 6,100 per 100 kg, Vora said. Prices of the 1121 basmati rice variety were also steady at INR 7,800 per 100 kg. Prices of broken rice remained steady at INR 2,700 per 100 kg, Vora said.

 

The price of sona masoori rice was also steady at INR 5,200 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Andhra Pradesh's Vijayawada, local trader Ravi Shankar said. He said prices are likely to remain at the current levels with a movement of INR 100-INR 200 on either side.

 

Prices of MAIZE in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 2,300 per 100 kg, according to traders. With the next crop due to arrive only after October, traders expect maize prices to rise by INR 100 in the near term if demand remains good.  End
