Telangana kharif sowing dn 24% YoY at 1.92 mln acres as of Wed

MUMBAI – The sowing of kharif crops has commenced in Telangana, with 1.92 million acres (1 acre = 0.4 hectares) covered as of Wednesday, down more than 24% on year, according to the first kharif sowing report released by the state agriculture department. The area under kharif crops in the same period a year ago was 2.53 acres.
The acreage under tur stood at 50,574 acres, down from 101,104 acres sown a year ago, the report showed. Moong acreage fell to 3,713 acres from 13,600 acres last year, while that of urad fell to 830 acres from 1,973 acres a year ago. The total area sown under all pulses was 55,117 acres, down from 116,725 acres sown last year.
Maize acreage in the state fell to 48,766 acres from 50,253 acres a year ago, according to the report. On the other hand, the area sown under jowar rose to 17,437 acres from 13,907 acres last year, and that of paddy also rose to 36,300 acres from 33,876 acres a year ago.
The total area sown under oilseeds so far was 104,436 acres, up from 34,177 acres sown in the previous year. Under oilseeds, the acreage under soybean was 104,304 acres, up from 31,702 acres sown a year ago. Soybean accounts for most of the acreage under oilseeds in the state.
Cotton acreage so far fell to 1.53 acres from 1.96 acres sown a year ago. Farmers have also sown sugarcane across 5,911 acres so far, while sowing had yet to begin in the same period last year, the report showed.
Kharif crops are sown once the southwest monsoon begins in India. In Telangana, sowing of kharif crops begin in June, while harvest ends as late as December for some kharif crops.
The water level in reservoirs across Telangana was 228.03 billion cubic metres as of Wednesday, compared with 377.02 billion cubic metres a year ago, the report showed. End
