NEW DELHI - Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan Wednesday announced plans to strengthen agricultural research on climate-resistant seeds to help farmers cope with the challenges posed by climate change. Speaking at the Viksit Krishi Sankalp Abhiyan event here, he outlined several initiatives aimed to improve agricultural productivity and farmers welfare.

The government will work to develop pest-resistant sugarcane seeds to reduce crop loss and enhance yields. It will also focus on shortening the duration of the tur crop to less than eight months through research and development, he said.

Chouhan also announced plans to set up Krishi Vigyan Kendras in every district to provide farmers with access to expert advice, technology, and training. To improve the quality of seeds available to farmers, the government will strengthen the Seeds Act.

The Centre will also work on improving pesticides for individual crops and implement over 70 suggestions received from farmers to improve the existing schemes to enhance agricultural productivity, reduce crop loss, and increase farmers' incomes, he said.

The government, Chouhan said, has identified over 500 researchable issues on which action will be taken. "In our interaction with farmers, we have identified several ground issues which include work on seeds, machinery, pests among others. We will work on them one-by-one," he said.

The ministry is likely to begin work on heat and drought-tolerant crop varieties for cotton, tur, sugarcane. They are also likely to begin work on identifying affordable equipment for cotton picking, vegetable transplanting, and sugarcane harvesting.

According to Chouhan, one of the main issues the ministry will work on is revamp to Farmer Producer Organisation guidelines to include fewer members while providing them higher funding. The farmers have asked the ministry to work on subsidising low-cost tools for small and marginal farmers, which the minister ensured he will look into.  End
