MUMBAI – Prices of all the pulses rose in the key spot markets of the country on Tuesday, traders said. Prices of tur and urad rose tracking rise in prices of imports from Myanmar, they said. Chana prices rose due to a slight increase in need-based demand from millers, they said.

CHANA prices in Akola, Maharashtra, rose by INR 25 from Monday to INR 5,825-INR 5,850 per 100 kg, said Ankit Kedia, a local trader. Arrivals fell by 500 bags to 2,500 bags (1 bag = 50 kg). Need-based demand from millers has risen slightly, supporting prices of the legume, he said. However, prices are likely to remain range-bound for rest of the month, he said.

Prices may increase when arrivals slow down in July, according to Kedia. Once the southwest monsoon sets in fully, farmers will be occupied with sowing and may not have time to bring their produce to the market, he said. Prices of chana in Jaipur, Rajasthan, also rose by INR 25 from the previous day to INR 5,775 per 100 kg, traders said.

TUR prices in Akola increased by INR 100 from Monday to INR 6,950-INR 7,000 per 100 kg, Kedia said. Arrivals were steady at 2,500 bags (1 bag = 50 kg). The rise in domestic tur prices is being driven by an increase in the prices of imported lemon tur variety from Myanmar, he said. Prices of tur from Myanmar have risen by INR 150-INR 200 per 100 kg since Monday as demand for the cheaper legume has increased, he said. Tur from Myanmar is cheaper than domestic tur by INR 200-INR 600 per kg.

However, the rise in prices is likely to be limited due to low demand for the domestic legume, according to Kedia. "Prices of tur will only depend on the prices of lemon tur from Myanmar in the short term due to lack of any cues in the domestic market," he said.

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, rose by INR 150 from the previous day to INR 7,050-INR 7,150 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

URAD prices in Chandausi, Uttar Pradesh, rose by INR 50 from Monday to INR 7,050-INR 7,100 per 100 kg, the association said. Prices of urad in Jalgaon, Maharashtra, also rose by INR 50 from the previous day to INR 6,850-INR 7,050 per 100 kg.

Prices of domestic urad rose tracking the rise in prices of imports from Myanmar, traders said. Prices also increased due to positive market sentiment after the Madhya Pradesh government announced it would procure the legume at the minimum support price on Friday. Procurement will begin Thursday, the state government said. The minimum support price of urad is INR 7,400 per 100 kg for the kharif marketing season 2024-25 (Oct-Sept). Madhya Pradesh is the top producer of urad in the country.  End
