MUMBAI – Food Corp. of India procured over 30 million tonnes of wheat for the central pool during the rabi marketing season 2025-26 (Apr-Mar), it said in a post on social media platform X on Monday. This led to disbursement of INR 700 billion at the minimum support price to 2.38 million farmers, according to the post.

With higher wheat production and good procurement, wheat stocks were up 3.4% on month as of Jun. 1; on year, they were up 23.4% at 36.9 million tonnes. According to buffer norms, minimum wheat stocks for Apr-Jun should be 7.5 million tonnes – operational stock of 4.46 million tonnes and strategic reserve of 3.00 million tonnes. 

The government sets the buffer requirement of food grains for every quarter, and FCI has to maintain the levels mandated.

Meanwhile, the government has reimposed wheat stock limits for preempting price volatility and tempering inflationary expectations. Wheat traders or wholesalers cannot stock more than 3,000 tonnes and retailers can stock only 10 tonnes in each of their outlets. For big chain retailers, the stock limit is 10 tonnes for each retail outlet and in depots, stock of 10 tonnes multiplied by the total number of outlets.  End
