MUMBAI – India received 3.7 millimetres of rainfall Friday, 32% below the normal 5.4 millimetres, according to data from the India Meteorological Department. Of the four homogeneous regions across the country, three received below-normal rainfall and one received above-normal showers.
The southern peninsula received 9.5 millimetres of rainfall, 53% above the normal of 6.2 millimetres, the data showed. Six out of 10 subdivisions in the region received "large excess" rainfall and two received "excess" showers. A cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal led to heavy rains over parts of southern India.
Rainfall in eastern India and the Northeast was 90% below normal at 1 millimetre. In north western India, rainfall was 0.4 millimetres, 82% below the normal 2.3 millimetres. Central India recorded 4.5 millimetres of rainfall, 17% below the normal 5.4 millimetres.
Of the 36 subdivisions, rainfall Friday was "large excess" in eight, "excess" in three, "deficient" in three, and "large deficient" in 16, the data showed. There was no rainfall in four subdivisions and "normal" showers in two subdivisions.
Since Jun. 1, the country has received 33.7 millimetres of rainfall, 33% below the normal weighted average of 50.4 millimetres for the period, the data showed. End
