NEW DELHI – India's soymeal exports in May rose 16% on year to 137,000 tonnes, The Soybean Processors Association of India said in a release. However, cumulative exports in the first eight months of the edible oil year 2024–25 (Oct–Sept) fell to 1.46 million tonnes from 1.64 million tonnes in 2023-24, data from SOPA showed.

India exported soymeal to more than 70 countries from October to May. Bangladesh, Nepal, Germany, France, Japan, and Kenya continued to be the top buyers of Indian soymeal, according to data released by the association. Soymeal production in May declined to 710,000 tonnes from 750,000 tonnes a year ago. Output in the eight months from October to May stood at 6.23 million tonnes, compared with 6.83 million tonnes a year ago.

Soybean arrivals in May were reported at 600,000 tonnes, lower than 750,000 tonnes a year ago. In Oct–May, arrivals slipped to 8.35 million tonnes from 8.95 million tonnes a year ago, SOPA said.

Soybean crushing during Oct-May was 7.9 million tonnes, down from 8.7 million tonnes a year ago, SOPA estimates showed. At the end of May, soybean stock with farmers, traders, and processing plants stood at 2.28 million tonnes. Government agencies--National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India and National Cooperative Consumers Federation of India--held about 1.6 million tonnes as of Jun. 11, SOPA said.

At the end of May, oil mills, traders, and farmers were left with around 3.88 million tonnes of soybean stock, down from 4.80 million tonnes a month ago, SOPA data showed. Meanwhile, soymeal stock at the end of May rose to 149,000 tonnes, up from 136,000 tonnes in April. The rise in soymeal stock despite lower soybean arrivals, production, and crushing indicates subdued domestic and export demand.

Soybean is crushed to extract soyoil, leaving the by-product soymeal. This is primarily used as poultry and livestock feed. Indian soymeal is non-genetically modified and rich in protein, making it attractive in global feed markets. However, competitive pressure from cheaper feed alternatives such as distiller's dried grains with solubles weigh on exports. India is among the largest importers of soyoil and an exporter of soymeal.  End
