MUMBAI – India's vegetable oil imports declined 22% on year in May to 1.19 million tonne due to a fall in palmoil, soyoil, and refined, bleached, and deodorised palmolein imports, according to data by the Solvent Extractors' Association of India released Thursday. The imports comprised 1.18 million tonnes of edible oils and 12,040 tonnes of non-edible oils, the association said. Edible oil imports fell 22% on year in May, the association said.
In the first seven months of the oil year 2024-25 (Nov-May), total vegetable oil imports reached 7.88 million tonnes, down by 9% from 8.68 million tonnes in the same period last year, the association said in a release. Imports of crude palm oil and sunflower oil declined, and those of soyoil rose during the seven months, it said. India is the world's largest importer of edible oils and its basket comprises crude and refined palm oils, crude soyoil, and sunflower oil.
Crude palm oil imports fell 5% on year to 505,744 tonnes in May. Similarly, imports of refined, bleached, and deodorised palmolein fell 64% on year to 80,319 tonnes in May. Crude palm oil imports during Nov-May were down nearly 33% from a year ago at 2.47 million tonnes, while refined, bleached, and deodorised palmolein imports in the same period were down nearly 34% at 819,171 tonnes. Indonesia and Malaysia are the major suppliers of RBD Palmolein and Crude Palm Oil to India.
The government on May 30, slashed the basic import duty on crude edible oils--palm, soybean, and sunflower--from 20% to 10%, effectively reducing the total import duty from 27.5% to 16.5%. The widened duty differential of 19.25?tween crude and refined oils is a strategic masterstroke--reinvigorating domestic refining, reducing dependency on cheap imports, and firmly placing 'Make in India' at the heart of our agri-value chain, the association said.
The reduction in duty on crude palm oil will help reduce domestic prices, benefiting consumers, it said. It will discourage imports of refined palmolien and shift demand back to crude palm oil, thereby revitalising the domestic refining sector.
Crude sunflower oil imports fell to 183,555 tonnes in May from 410,727 tonnes a year ago, the association said. Similarly, crude sunflower oil imports in Nov-May fell to 1.68 million tonnes from 2.0 million tonnes same period last year. Soft oil imports consisting of soyoil, sunflower, mustard, and others rose to 4.35 million tonnes during Nov-May from 3.60 million tonnes in the same period a year ago.
Crude soyoil imports during May rose to 398,585 tonnes from 324,016 tonnes a year ago. Meanwhile, crude soyoil imports during Nov-May rose to 2.67 million tonnes from 1.60 million tonnes same period last year. During Nov-May, India imported palm oil and refined, bleached, and deodorised palmolein from Indonesia and Malaysia, and soyoil from Argentina, Brazil, the US and Russia. Sunflower oil was imported from Russia, Ukraine, and Argentina.
Indonesia and Malaysia were the biggest suppliers of refined, bleached, and deodorised palmolein and crude palm oil to India. During Nov-May, India imported 996,886 tonnes of crude palm oil and 677,612 tonnes of refined, bleached, and deodorised palmolein from Indonesia. Crude palm oil imports from Malaysia in Nov-May were 1.08 million tonnes and refined, bleached, and deodorised palmolein were at 123,752 tonnes.
In the case of crude soyoil, during Nov-May, India imported from Argentina 1.58 million tonnes, 573,384 tonnes from Brazil, 188,384 tonnes from the US and 162,347 tonnes from Russia. Crude sunflower oil imports from Russia during Nov-May were 970,533 tonnes, from Ukraine 392,485 tonnes, and from Argentina 166,650 tonnes.
As of Jun. 1, total edible oil stocks were at 1.3 million tonnes, including 685,000 tonnes at ports and 648,000 in the pipeline. Last year, total edible oil stocks were 2.42 million tonnes, including 668,000 tonnes at ports and 1.75 million tonnes in the pipeline, according to data released by the SEA.
The following table details edible oil imports in April, in tonnes, compared with year-ago levels, with the change in percentage, according to data from the SEA:
