MUMBAI – Prices of mustard were steady in the key markets, while those of groundnut and soybean fell, said traders. All oilseed prices are likely to remain largely at current levels for some time as demand is unlikely to pick-up before Diwali festival, they said.

Prices of MUSTARD seed in Kota, Rajasthan, were steady at INR 4,270-INR 6,200 per 100 kilograms at Gondal, Gujarat, with arrivals at 17,000 bags, said Mahesh Sameriya, a trader from Rajasthan. Arrivals of the seed across the country were 450,000 bags.

Prices are likely to remain largely steady until there is demand for festivals, such as Diwali, said Ashok Virvani, a trader from Gujarat. In the long term, mustard prices are seen rising on lower production estimate, according to traders. According to the government's third advance estimates, mustard seed production in crop year 2024-25 (Jul-Jun) is projected at 12.6 million tonnes, down from 13.3 million tonnes a year ago.

GROUNDNUT prices were down by around INR 300 at INR 4,700-INR 5,700 per 100 kilograms at Gondal, Gujarat, with arrivals at 13,050 bags, said local trader Ashok Virvani. Prices fell due to the arrival of poor quality crops, he said. Heavy rains in Gujarat damaged the quality of new crop arriving in the market, Virvani added. Moreover, persistently poor demand for Indian groundnut and its oil in global markets also weighed on prices.

Moreover, there is ample stock remaining with the government, bought from farmers at the minimum support price. The stocks are lying in the godowns and unless these are sold, prices are likely to continue falling, Dilip Ramani, farmer and trader said. Groundnut prices in Ratlam mandi in Madhya Pradesh were at INR 4,700-INR 5,800, said Narendra Porwal, a local trader.

SOYBEAN prices in Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh, were slightly down by INR 50 at INR 3,800-INR 4,250 per 100 kg and arrivals were up 500 bags at 3,400 bgs, Narendra Porwal said. In Gondal, soybean prices were down INR 100 at INR 3,800-INR 4,000 per 100 kg with arrivals at 13,600 bags. In the long term, soybean prices may see a bearish trend due to oversupply in domestic markets, high soyoil imports, cautious buying, and availability of soymeal substitutes, traders said.
