MUMBAI – Wheat prices were mixed in key markets of the country Wednesday, traders said. In Kota, Rajasthan, prices of the staple grain were slightly down from the previous day, traders added. However, prices of maize and rice were steady from the previous day due to lack of fresh cues.

Prices of WHEAT were slightly down in Kota by INR 5 at INR 2,440-INR 2,450 per 100 kilograms as arrivals rose from the previous day, local trader Aniket Mehta said. Arrivals in the market were up by 5,000 bags compared with the previous day at 25,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), Mehta said. Although arrivals rose from the previous day, they remained in a range of 20,000-25,000 bags, which is usual during June, he added.

There is also fear in the market about the government starting open market sales of wheat by end of this month or beginning of July which is also weighing on prices, Mehta said. Earlier, a government source told Informist that the Centre may start open market sales of wheat by end of June or early July to increase supply in the market to control prices. The government can sell at least 6 million tonnes, the official said. Open market sales aim to augment domestic supply and stabilise prices by releasing wheat from the central pool to bulk buyers such as flour mills and manufacturers.

Wheat prices in Navi Mumbai's Vashi market were steady from the previous day at INR 2,725 per 100 kg, local wholesale dealer Devendra Vora said. However, prices of the staple grain were up by INR 50 at INR 2,750 per 100 kg in Delhi, according to traders. Prices of mill-quality wheat in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were slightly up by INR 10 at INR 2,730 per 100 kg due to marginal increase in demand, said local trader Gaurav Kochar.

Prices of basmati sella RICE variety in Vashi were steady at INR 6,400-INR 6,500 per 100 kg, Vora said. Prices of broken rice remained steady at INR 2,700 per 100 kg. The price of sona masoori rice was also steady at INR 5,200 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Andhra Pradesh's Vijayawada, local trader Ravi Shankar said. Traders expect rice prices to remain steady in the near-term due to lack of fresh cues.

Prices of MAIZE in Indore were steady from the previous day at INR 2,300 per 100 kg, Kochar said. With the next crop arrivals starting only after October, he expects maize prices to rise by INR 100 in the near term if demand persists. He expects farmers to shift from crops like soybean and groundnut to maize amid better returns in the kharif season.  End
