MUMBAI – Wheat arrivals and prices fell slightly Tuesday in Kota, Rajasthan owing to low demand, traders said. However, prices in other key markets were largely steady from the previous day, they said. Prices of rice and maize remained unchanged from the previous day due to lack of fresh cues, traders said.

Prices of WHEAT were slightly down in Kota by INR 5 at INR 2,445-INR 2,470 per 100 kilograms due to low demand, said local trader Aniket Mehta. Arrivals in the market also fell by 5,000 bags from the previous day to 15,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) due to ongoing heatwave in the state, Mehta said. The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for a severe heatwave in western Rajasthan and a heatwave in eastern Rajasthan till Thursday.

Prices of mill-quality wheat in Indore, Madhya Pradesh were steady at INR 2,720 per 100 kg, said local trader Gaurav Kochar. Wheat prices in Navi Mumbai's Vashi were also steady from the previous day at INR 2,725 per 100 kg, local wholesale dealer Devendra Vora said. However, prices of the staple grain were up by INR 5 at INR 2,725 per 100 kg in Delhi, according to traders.

Prices of basmati sella RICE variety in the Vashi were steady at INR 6,400-INR 6,500 per 100 kg, Vora said. Prices of broken rice remained steady at INR 2,700 per 100 kg. The price of sona masoori rice was also steady at INR 5,200 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Andhra Pradesh's Vijayawada, local trader Ravi Shankar said. Traders expect rice prices to remain steady in the near-term due to lack of fresh cues.

Prices of MAIZE in Indore were steady from the previous day at INR 2,300 per 100 kg, Kochar said. With the next crop arrivals starting only after October, he expects maize prices to rise by INR 100 in the near term if demand persists.

Kochar said the upside in maize prices will be restricted as ethanol plants now prefer Food Corp. of India's rice to make ethanol instead of maize. In the medium term, however, this would lead to limited rice stocks and lead to higher demand for maize to make ethanol, supporting prices of the grain.  End
