MUMBAI – Prices of mustard and groundnut rose in key markets, while those of soybean were unchanged on Monday, said traders. Prices of mustard are likely to increase ahead of festivals, while those of groundnut could fall amid the arrival of new crops, traders added.

Prices of MUSTARD seed in Kota rose by INR 50 to INR 6,250 per 100 kilograms, according to Mahesh Sameriya, a trader from Rajasthan. Arrivals of the seed across the country were steady at 18,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg).

Prices for good quality seeds with higher oil content rose as there is only a limited quantity arriving at mandies at the moment, Sameriya said. "Mustard prices are expected to rise in the long term on estimation of lower production this year," he added. According to the government's third advance estimates, mustard seed production in crop year 2024-25 (Jul-Jun) is projected at 12.6 million tonnes, down from 13.3 million tonnes a year ago.

GROUNDNUT prices were up around INR 300 to INR 4,500-INR 6,350 per 100 kg at Gondal, Gujarat, and arrivals were at 20,010 bags, said Ashok Virvani. Prices improved because less good quality groundnut was available in the market, said Virvani.

Groundnut prices have not been performing well for a long time owing to persistently poor export demand for Indian groundnut and its oil in global markets. However, rain-damaged arrivals in most spot markets in Gujarat amid slight improvement in demand, hence prices rose, he said.

SOYBEAN prices in Kota, Rajasthan, were steady at INR 4,250 per 100 kg. Arrivals were unchanged at 9,000 bags. In the long term, soybean prices may see a bearish trend due to oversupply in domestic markets, high soyoil imports, cautious buying, and availability of soymeal substitutes, said Sandeep Sarda, a trader from Madhya Pradesh.
